Calzolaretto (Gabriele Cappelini)
The Stigmata of St. Francis and Saints

Circa 1515-20
Pinacoteca Nazionale, Ferrara

On the far left is the "a devout and holy friar" who was St. Francis's companion when he received the stigmata (Stouck, 498). In the background are St. Peter (holding his keys), St. James the Greater (with the pilgrim's staff), and St. Louis King of France (crown). In the clouds above the latter Christ is transmitting the stigmata to St. Francis.
